मृणालिनी साराभाई - जन्म: (11 मई, 1918)

मृणालिनी साराभाई ( जन्म- 11 मई, 1918, केरल; मृत्यु- 21 जनवरी, 2016, अहमदाबाद, गुजरात) भारत की प्रसिद्ध शास्त्रीय नृत्यांगना थीं। उन्हें 'अम्मा' के तौर पर जाना जाता था। शास्त्रीय नृत्य में उनके योगदान तथा उपलब्धियों को देखते हुए भारत सरकार ने उन्हें 'पद्मभूषण' से सम्मानित किया था।


-मृणालिनी साराभाई का जन्म भारतीय राज्य केरल में 11 मई, 1918 को हुआ था।
-अपने बचपन का अधिकांश समय मृणालिनी साराभाई ने स्विट्जरलैंड में बिताया। यहां 'डेलक्रूज स्‍कूल' से उन्‍होंने पश्चिमी तकनीक से नृत्‍य कलाएं सीखीं। उन्‍होंने शांति निकेतन से भी शिक्षा प्राप्‍त की थी।
-मृणालिनी साराभाई ने भारत लौटकर जानी-मानी नृत्‍यांगना मीनाक्षी सुंदरम पिल्लई से भरतनाट्यम का प्रशिक्षण लिया था और फिर दक्षिण भारतीय शास्त्रीय नृत्य और पौराणिक गुरु थाकाज़ी कुंचू कुरुप से कथकली के शास्त्रीय नृत्य-नाटक में प्रशिक्षण लिया।
-उनके पति विक्रम साराभाई देश के सुप्रसिद्ध भौतिक वैज्ञानिक थे। उनकी बेटी मल्लिका साराभाई भी प्रसिद्ध नृत्यांगना और समाजसेवी हैं।
-मृणालिनी की बड़ी बहन लक्ष्मी सहगल स्वतंत्रता सेनानी थीं। वे प्रसिद्ध क्रांतिकारी सुभाषचंद्र बोस की आज़ाद हिंद फ़ौज की महिला सेना झांसी रेजीमेंट की कमांडर इन चीफ़ थीं।
-भारत सरकार की ओर से मृणालिनी साराभाई को देश के प्रसिद्ध नागरिक सम्मान 'पद्मभूषण' और 'पद्मश्री' से सम्मानित किया गया था। 'यूनिवर्सिटी ऑफ़ ईस्ट एंगलिया', नॉविच यूके ने भी उन्हें डॉक्टरेट की उपाधि दी थी। 'इंटरनेशनल डांस काउंसिल पेरिस' की ओर से उन्हें एग्जीक्यूटिव कमेटी के लिए भी नामित किया गया था।
-प्रसिद्ध 'दर्पणा एकेडमी' की स्थापना मृणालिनी साराभाई ने की थी।


Mrinalini Vikram Sarabhai (11 May 1918 – 21 January 2016) was an Indian classical dancer, choreographer and instructor. She was the founder and director of the Darpana Academy of Performing Arts, an institute for imparting training in dance, drama, music and puppetry, in the city of Ahmedabad. She received many awards and citations in recognitions of her contribution to art. She trained over 18,000 students in Bharatnatyam and Kathakali. She was the wife of the Indian physicist Vikram Sarabhai.


Mrinalini was born in Kerala on 11 May 1918, to S. Swaminathan, a lawyer who practised criminal law at Madras High Court, and A.V. Ammukutty, better known as Ammu Swaminathan, a social worker and independence activist . She spent her childhood in Switzerland, where, she received her first lessons in the Dalcroze school, a Western technique of dance movements. She was educated at Shantiniketan under the guidance of Rabindranath Tagore where she realised her true calling. She then went for a short time to the United States where she enrolled in the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. On returning to India, she began her training in the south Indian classical dance form of Bharatanatyam under and the classical dance-drama of Kathakali under the legendary Guru Thakazhi Kunchu Kurup.


Mrinalini married the Indian physicist Vikram Sarabhai who is considered to be the Father of the Indian Space Program in 1942. She has a son, Kartikeya and a daughter Mallika who too went on to attain fame in dance and theatre. Mrinalini founded Darpana in Ahmedabad in 1948. A year later, she performed at the Théâtre national de Chaillot in Paris where she received a lot of critical acclaim.


Mrinalini and Vikram had a troubled marriage. According to biographer Amrita Shah, Vikram Sarabhai had a void in his personal life he sought to fill by dedicating himself to applying science for social good.
She was admitted to hospital on 20 January 2016 and died the next day at the age of 97."My mother just left for her eternal dance," her daughter, leading danseuse, actor and activist Mallika Sarabhai, said in a Facebook post announcing the death--


Awards
Mrinalini Sarabhai has been awarded by the Indian government with the national civilian awards Padma Bhushan in 1992 and the Padma Shri in 1965.[8] She was honoured with the Degree of Doctor of Letters, honoris causa (LittD) by the University of East Anglia, Norwich, UK in 1997. She was also the first Indian to receive the medal and Diploma of the French association Archives Internationales de la Danse. She was nominated to the Executive Committee of the International Dance Council, Paris in 1990 and awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship, New Delhi in 1994. She was presented with a gold medal by the Mexican Government for her choreography for the Ballet Folklorico of Mexico.


The Darpana Academy of Performing Arts celebrated its golden jubilee on 28 December 1998, with the announcement of the annual "Mrinalini Sarabhai Award for Classical Excellence", in the field of classical dance.


She was the first recipient of the Nishagandhi Puraskaram, an annual award of the Government of Kerala. The award was presented in 2013.
