This day adopted by the UN General Assembly in its resolution 57/129.
The theme for this year is "Protecting Civilians, Protecting Peace". The theme marks the upcoming 20th anniversary when for the first time the Security Council explicitly mandated a peacekeeping mission (UNAMSIL- United Nations Mission in Sierra Leone) to protect civilians.
